Star Wars Galaxies: State of the Game, Chapter 7

Chapter 7 has launched and now we do our usual post-chapter State of the Game update. Lead Designer Thomas Blair and Producer Jake Neri drop in to pen a complete update on where Star Wars Galaxies sits today and where it's headed.

The Collections system allows players to get three primary kinds of collections: click collections, inventory collections, and kill collections. Click collections involve clicking an object in the world to "collect" it. Inventory collections are something you loot from the corpse of a creature. And kill collections involve killing a specific creature. Each kill collection will have a counter, with some requiring that you kill hundreds of creatures. Even more challenging is when we make collections out of other collections. There are multiple ways to find a collection, and we even built a system so players can track who was the first on each server to finish a collection. . "Server firsts," or the person on each server to finish a collection, are not only tracked on the SWG website, but also in the collection journal interface. Any player can open their journal, mouse over a particular collection, and see who finished it first.

State of the game.

Before Chapter 7: "I whant Chapter 7! I whant chapter 7! This chapter is great!"

After Chapter 7: "WTF! Damn collections! It takes too much time! This chapter suck! I hate this chapter7!".

And so on. Chapter 7, good or bad for the game? Myself I don't care much about it. I'm sure not going to kill same freaking mobs for hours just to get a stupid flower or a skill that only give you buff for 4min etc. Whats the point with that?

I wouldn't mind killing 100 of so and so mobs, it would keep me busy for an hour or so. But 400?? I'd like to collect my reward before I turn 60.

Sad part is... I think it's more then 400. They fail again. =(

I don't ask for items after 20min, but I do ask for some love to SWG. I wanna see the Dev team work hard (they doing good right now but more) and let it take time, but bring us something good that WORKS! And when they have that!

LET THE WORLD KNOW ABOUT IT! Thats the only way. Make some nice trailers, pop ups at websites like Funcom did with the old game Anarchy Online. Let people know that you have changed. Give us gifts, give us more of this 21 days free play. In the end it will be better.

Or just pull the plug. Can't go on like this.

One easy way is to make PULLS for players to vote. For example "Do you what slower combat? Yes or no?" Or "Do you whant SOMETHING like the old animations? Yes or no?"... and so on. Its so damn simple.

What can go wrong? Just look at the forum. People ask for the old animation and have been doing that for years. Same thing with the stupid fast speed we have to day. Sure people whant thing fast, but do they wanna play a game on LSD? NO!

WHY IS IT SO DAMN HARD?

The saddest part is that they still fail in the story-telling department.

Does anybody actually believe that killing e.g. dozens of spineflaps ( for those who have never played SWG, they are butterfly-like creatures) to get some books for a +100 storage capacity increase collection is really Star Wars content?

Again, you do not feel involved in or even remotely connected to the key events of the Star Wars story between Ep IV and Ep V. Turbine/Codemasters managed to pull it off in Lord of the Rings Online where your actions actually help the fellowship. Of course, you cannot influence the main course of events, but you still feel like a major contributor.

Also, I hoped that Aurilia would be brought back as a great quest hub, something that is comparable to Mustafar quest content. What we got instead is a disparate bunch of quests and collection thingies, and heap of buggy instances.

SOE has once again failed to show any creativity. As I hear in Chapter 8 they plan to add new starships... starships that already exist in the game as non-playable ships, all they have to do is slap an instanced interior on them, pump up the hype, and sell it as "new Star Warsy" content.

Good points, but remember that SOE is not alone in this exercise. They don't own the IP, so they have to abide by a set of rules that we, as players, are not privy to. While I'd also like to see more content geared toward the actual storyline of the GCW, it's nice to see a new challenge to take on.

As for the old animations, yes, they were very cool, but as has been explained previously, and at great length, by the development team, the game is different now and those animations no longer work.
